Sehlabathebe National Park
Sehlabathebe National Park is not just a photographer’s paradise—it is a place steeped in natural wonder and cultural history. This park is located within the Drakensberg Mountains and forms part of the larger Maloti-Drakensberg Trans frontier Park. A sanctuary for diverse plant and animal species, it is particularly known for its high-altitude grasslands, alpine meadows, and the spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges.
With its remote location, Sehlabathebe remains relatively untouched, offering an unspoiled environment where you can connect with nature and practice your photography without distractions. The park’s diverse landscapes, including wetlands, river valleys, and rugged mountain cliffs, make it a perfect location for capturing a wide range of shots, from wide-angle vistas to macro close-ups of plant life and wildlife.
Not only will you encounter breathtaking scenery, but you’ll also gain insight into Lesotho’s history and culture. The area is home to the Basotho people, whose traditional lifestyle and ancient rock art sites offer a window into the country’s rich past.
What You Will Experience:
Photography Mastery: Focus on a range of photographic techniques, including landscape composition, light, exposure, and creating striking images of both sweeping vistas and intricate details. Learn to work with natural light, create dramatic contrasts, and explore the art of storytelling through your photographs.
Exploration of Sehlabathebe National Park: Your adventure will take you through Sehlabathebe National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Lesotho’s oldest protected area. At an altitude of 2500 meters, this remote park is renowned for its extraordinary sandstone formations, rolling grasslands, and dramatic mountain peaks.
Capturing Culture and History: The park is home to an array of cultural sites, including ancient San rock art, which dates back thousands of years. You’ll have the rare opportunity to photograph these ancient works while learning about their cultural significance.
Personalized Instruction: With a maximum of six participants, this small group workshop ensures you receive individual attention and tailored advice. Carl and Murray will work closely with you to improve your photography techniques and help you make the most of every shooting opportunity.
Adventure in the Highlands: Each day, you will embark on photography expeditions, discovering and capturing the majestic landscapes of the Highlands, from its rolling hills to its striking rock formations. Whether you’re photographing the serene valleys or the cloud-kissed mountain peaks, you’ll be constantly surrounded by inspiring scenery.
Malutsunyane Falls
One of the highlights of the workshop is the opportunity to photograph Malutsunyane Falls, one of Southern Africa’s most spectacular waterfalls. Situated in the remote eastern part of Lesotho, near the town of Semonkong, Malutsunyane Falls plunges an impressive 192 meters (630 feet) into a deep gorge, making it the highest single-drop waterfall in Southern Africa.
The falls are surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush, green valleys, creating a breathtaking contrast that offers an ideal setting for landscape photographers. The surrounding area, with its rugged terrain, offers a variety of perspectives and compositions to capture—from wide-angle shots of the falls in their full glory to close-ups of the waterfall's mist and the delicate plants that thrive in the spray.
Whether you choose to photograph the falls at sunrise when the light gently bathes the landscape or in the golden hour before sunset, the views and photographic opportunities will be unmatched. Malutsunyane Falls is not only a photographer’s dream but also an awe-inspiring natural wonder that you won’t want to miss.
